Classical over-the-barrier model for neutralization of highly charged ions above thin dielectric films

چکیده
We apply the classical over-the-barrier (COB) model to charge transfer between highly charged ions (HCIs) and targets consisting of thin dielectric films on metals. Distances for the onset of classically allowed above-surface electron capture are obtained as a function of HCI charge state, film thickness, film permittivity, and film-metal electron binding energies. The model describes the crossover between the previously existing COB model for bulk metals and bulk dielectrics as the thickness of a dielectric film on a metal substrate increases through three distinct regimes. For ultrathin films with low permittivity and positive electron affinity, over-the-barrier charge transfer initiates from the metal electrons behind the film and critical distances are greater than those from bare metal targets. This result is consistent and compared with the recent observation of potential emission enhancement above thin C60 films on Au(111) with increasing film thickness [Bodewits, Hoekstra, Kowarik, Dobes, and Aumayr, Phys. Rev. A 84, 042901 (2011)].

Extended Classical Over–Barrier Model for Collisions of Highly Charged Ions with Conducting and Insulating Surfaces
We have extended the classical over–barrier model to simulate the neutralization dynamics of highly charged ions interacting under grazing incidence with conducting and insulating surfaces. Our calculations are based on simple model rates for resonant and Auger transitions. We include effects caused by the dielectric response of the target and, for insulators, localized surface charges. Charact...
متن کاملHighly charged ion (HCI) modified tunnel junctions
The neutralization energy carried by highly charged ions (HCIs) provides an alternative method for localizing energy on a target’s surface, producing features and modifying surfaces with fluences and kinetic energy damage that are negligible compared to singly ionized atoms. Since each HCI can deposit an enormous amount of energy into a small volume of the surface (e.g., Xe delivers 51 keV of n...
متن کاملA Numerical Study of the Sour Gas Reforming in a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Reactor
In this paper, using a one-dimensional simulation model, the reforming process of sour gas, i.e. CH4, CO2, and H2S, to the various charged particles and syngas in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor is studied. An electric field is applied across the reactor radius, and thus a non-thermal plasma discharge is formed within the reactor. Based on the space...
متن کاملInvestigations on structural and electrical properties of Cadmium Zinc Sulfide thin films
Nowadays, II – IV group semiconductor thin films have attracted considerable attention from the research community because of their wide range of application in the fabrication of solar cells and other opto-electronic devices. Cadmium zinc sulfide (Zn-CdS) thin films were grown by chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is used to analyze the structure and crystallite ...

We report on a measurement of craters in thin dielectric films formed by Xe(Q+) (26 ≤ Q ≤ 44) projectiles. Tunnel junction devices with ion-irradiated barriers were used to amplify the effect of charge-dependent cratering through the exponential dependence of tunneling conductance on barrier thickness. Electrical conductance of a crater σ(c)(Q) increased by 4 orders of magnitude (7.9 × 10(-4) μ...
